American Standard Home Additions & ADU: The Miami Owner’s Guide
We install American Standard-compatible home additions and ADUs throughout Miami, with typical projects running $53,100 – $153,400 depending on square footage, foundation work, and finish level. Most owners call us after realizing their existing American Standard tub, shower, or sink has reached the end of its service life and they’re weighing whether to repair the fixture or build something bigger around it. In Miami’s humidity, we regularly see American Standard tub surrounds pulling away from framing because the caulk line failed years ago and moisture worked in behind the tile. If you’re dealing with a cracked tub, a shower valve that won’t stop dripping, or a bathroom that’s just too small to function, we’re the team that shows up with a written number before anything else gets discussed.
We want to be clear up front: Penhallow Remodeling Miami is an independent general contractor. We are not affiliated with American Standard, and we don’t pretend to be. What we do is install, replace, and build around American Standard fixtures every week, and we know the product line well enough to tell you whether a part swap makes sense or whether you’re better off putting that money toward the ADU you’ve been considering.
Which American Standard Models This Applies To

American Standard has been making tubs, showers, and plumbing fixtures for over 140 years, and the brand spans several distinct lines. The Americast tub line is the one we see most often in Miami homes built in the 1990s and early 2000s. Americast is American Standard’s proprietary composite: a porcelain-enamel finish over a molded core that’s lighter than cast iron but more rigid than acrylic. The Princeton and Evolution tub models are the two Americast names that keep showing up on our work orders. The older Cast Iron tubs, original from the 1950s through the 1970s, are heavy, durable, and brutal to remove, but they’re also the tubs most worth refinishing rather than replacing.
For shower valves, American Standard uses a few different cartridges depending on era. The R120 and R121 cartridges service most pressure-balancing valves from the last two decades, while older homes may have the Aquarian or Ceramix lines. Here’s the compatibility gotcha we hit all the time: the cartridge model is stamped in tiny print on the trim plate or the valve body itself, but homeowners often swap trim kits without realizing the valve underneath is a different generation. You can’t put a 2020 trim kit on a 2005 valve body without an adapter, and sometimes not even then. If you can remove the handle and escutcheon plate and read the number off the valve, we can tell you over the phone whether it’s worth repairing.
For OEM versus aftermarket: American Standard OEM cartridges run $40 – $90 for most common valves, and we generally recommend OEM for anything inside the wall because the tolerances matter. For visible trim and handles, quality aftermarket parts from Danco or Plumb Pak usually fit fine and cost half as much. We stock the common R120 cartridges, American Standard tub drain assemblies, and overflow plates on our trucks, so most valve repairs don’t require a second trip.

Signs Your American Standard Home Additions & ADU Is Failing
- Water stains on the ceiling below the bathroom. The shower pan or tub drain gasket has failed. In Miami, we see this most in Coconut Grove homes where the original cast iron plumbing was never replaced and the tub shoe connection rusted through. The stain shows up first, the smell follows.
- The tub flexes or creaks when you step in. Americast tubs are set in a mortar bed, and when the mortar wasn’t packed correctly or has crumbled, the tub shell moves. That movement eventually cracks the porcelain finish. If your tub moves under your weight, the substrate underneath has already failed.
- The shower valve won’t stop dripping even after you replace the cartridge. This means the valve body itself is scored from years of hard Miami water. Replacing the cartridge buys you months, not years. At that point, we’re opening the wall to replace the valve, and that’s often the moment homeowners decide to expand the project into a full remodel.
- The tub drain holds water for hours after you drain it. That’s a partially collapsed or corroded waste line, not a tub problem. But it fails in tandem with aging tubs because both are original to the house. In Miami, we see ABS and galvanized drain lines from the 1970s that are now shedding crust into the pipe.
- You’re noticing the finish is dull or cracked around the drain opening. Porcelain enamel doesn’t fade evenly. Chips and hairline cracks around the drain mean the tub has taken years of thermal cycling and the finish is compromised. Refinishing can buy you 3 – 5 years; a replacement tub with a written warranty is the longer play.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

For a straight American Standard tub or shower replacement in Miami, you’re looking at $5,900 – $14,160 depending on access, valve work, and whether the wall substrate needs replacement. For a full bathroom remodel built around new American Standard fixtures, the range is $10,620 – $33,040. If the long-term plan is an ADU or home addition that includes a bathroom, the total project runs $53,100 – $153,400, and you’re getting fresh plumbing, new framing, a new roof tie-in, and permits pulled and inspections passed.
What drives the number up: moving drain lines, replacing rotted subfloor, upgrading a 1/2″ supply line to 3/4″, and discovery work behind old walls. What drives it down: keeping the existing valve location, staying within the same footprint, and choosing mid-range fixtures. Every project gets a written price before work starts. The number on day one is the number on the invoice. If it fails inside a year, the 365-Day Done Right Promise means we come back and make it right at no charge, in writing, on every job.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely check a few things yourself: read the cartridge number off your valve, confirm whether the tub flexes under your weight, and note whether the drain gasket is visibly cracked from the access panel if you have one. That information helps us give you an accurate phone estimate.
What you should not do is open the wall yourself. Miami homes built before 1990 frequently have asbestos in the drywall compound, and cutting into that without testing creates a hazard. The same goes for removing old tub drains: if the drain shoe is corroded, it can snap off inside the fitting and turn a $600 repair into a $1,800 problem. This is where a background-checked, uniformed technician in your home is worth every dollar. Call us at (850) 988-7559 and we’ll talk through what you’re seeing before anyone touches a tool.
FAQs

An Americast tub with proper installation and a working exhaust fan typically lasts 20 – 30 years in Miami’s humidity. The finish can fail sooner if the bathroom isn’t ventilated, because consistent moisture breaks down the caulk line and lets water sit behind the tub. The valve cartridges last 8 – 15 years depending on water hardness. Call (850) 988-7559 if you’re not sure what generation of fixture you have.
Small chips and cracks in the finish can be repaired with a porcelain repair kit, and those repairs hold for a few years. Drain gaskets and overflow plates are straightforward to replace. But if the tub shell is flexing, the repair is never going to last, and the money is better spent on replacement. Call us for a straight answer on which path makes sense for your tub.
A standard tub or shower replacement runs 2 – 4 working days in Miami. A full bathroom remodel runs 2 – 4 weeks. A home addition or ADU with a bathroom runs 3 – 6 months depending on scope and the Miami-Dade permitting timeline. We give you a written arrival window and a written schedule before the work starts, and we honor both.
We keep the common R120 and R121 shower cartridges, tub drains, and overflow assemblies on the truck. Less common trim kits or Americast tub shells are ordered and typically arrive in Miami within 3 – 5 business days. If we don’t stock what you need, we’ll tell you on the phone before you pay for anything. Estimates are free, and a live person answers the phone 24/7.
We also work with KraftMaid, Cambria, and Silestone materials when a bathroom or ADU project grows into a full remodel, so you’re not juggling multiple contractors for cabinets, counters, and plumbing.
