Sterling Bathroom Remodeling: The Miami Owner’s Guide
We install and remodel Sterling bathroom products throughout Miami, with most full bathroom remodels running $10,620 – $33,040 depending on size, waterproofing method, and fixture choices. If you’re dealing with a cracked Sterling tub, a shower surround that’s pulling away from the wall, or a vanity top that won’t stop leaking into the cabinet below, we can usually assess it the same week and put a written price in your hand before any tools come off the truck. Most Sterling failures we see in Miami aren’t the product’s fault. They’re the result of humidity, hard water, or an original installation that skipped a step the manufacturer’s spec sheet called for.
Which Sterling Models This Applies To
Sterling is Kohler’s value line, and in Miami we see four product families most often: Ensemble (the classic wall-surround system with interlocking panels), Accord (the seamless-look surrounds with tongue-and-groove seams), Performa (entry-level tub-shower combos common in condos and rental properties), and Alliance (drop-in tubs and matching surrounds). Each line has its own dimensional quirks. Ensemble panels lock together with a specific tongue depth, Accord surrounds rely on a backer channel that has to sit perfectly flush, and Performa tubs have a 30-inch and 32-inch width variant that gets mixed up constantly. If you’re matching a replacement part, check the stamp on the underside of the tub deck or the back of the surround panel. It will read something like “71141112” followed by a series code. Take a photo of it. We’ve seen enough mismatched panel orders to know that guessing costs money.

Signs Your Sterling Bathroom Remodeling Is Failing
- Caulk separation at the surround seams. This is the most common early warning we see in Coconut Grove and Coral Gables homes. Sterling panels expand and contract with Miami’s humidity swings, and when the original installer used standard painter’s caulk instead of a high-movement sealant, the seam opens within a year or two. Water gets behind the panel and the damage starts where you can’t see it.
- Soft spots in the tub floor. If the tub deck flexes or creaks when you stand in it, the mortar bed underneath was likely skipped during installation. Sterling’s installation guide specifies a mortar or adhesive bed, and we regularly find tubs sitting directly on the subfloor in older Miami remodels. That flex is what eventually cracks the gelcoat.
- Persistent mildew smell despite cleaning. That odor usually means moisture is trapped behind the surround. Sterling panels are non-porous, so what you’re smelling is the framing and insulation behind them. By the time the smell is strong, the studs are often already compromised.
- Discolored or delaminating panel edges. Sterling’s Vikrell material holds up well, but severe hard water in parts of Miami-Dade can etch the surface over years. When the etching reaches the edge seams, the panel’s structural layer starts to separate. It looks like a thin white film peeling back.
- Cracked vinyl gaskets around the tub drain. These dry out and shrink, especially in homes where the AC runs constantly and pulls moisture from the air. A dried gasket lets water seep between the tub and the drain shoe, which means water under the tub that you won’t notice until the ceiling below stains.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
A targeted Sterling replacement in Miami, such as swapping a cracked tub or replacing a failing surround panel, typically runs $3,540 – $10,030. A complete bathroom remodel where we strip everything to the studs, rebuild the waterproofing system, and install new Sterling products runs $10,620 – $33,040. What moves the number: whether we’re doing panel replacement or full surround replacement, the condition of the framing behind the walls once we open things up, and whether your home’s plumbing needs any re-routing to fit the new fixture layout. Every estimate we give is a written, line-item price. You’ll see the part cost, the labor cost, and the waterproofing materials separated out. That number does not change once work starts unless you ask us to do something different. Trevor Nash has been straight with Miami homeowners for years about one thing: a cheap tub swap that skips the substrate repair is just a countdown to the next problem.
DIY or Call Us?
There are a few checks you can do safely. Look under the vanity for water staining, run your hand along the caulk lines for gaps, and photo the model stamp on the tub deck. But full Sterling replacement work is not a weekend project. Surround panels interlock under tension, and forcing a misaligned panel cracks the Vikrell. The waterproofing behind the surround is the actual job, and if you get that wrong, you get mold inside the wall. If the tub drain is leaking, that’s plumbing that touches the ceiling below you. Call (850) 988-7559 and we’ll give you a number first, then pick up the tools.
FAQs

A properly installed Sterling tub or surround should last 15 – 20 years in Miami’s climate. The product holds up; the installation and waterproofing are what determine lifespan. Homes with unvented exhaust fans or high humidity see faster sealant failure.
Small surface cracks can sometimes be filled with a Vikrell repair compound, but structural cracks near the drain or along the apron mean replacement. In our experience, a repair that looks good on day one fails within 18 months if the underlying flex issue isn’t addressed. Call (850) 988-7559 and we’ll give you an honest assessment, not just a patch job.
A direct tub swap with no framing or plumbing surprises is typically a two-day job, including waterproofing and sealant cure time. A full bathroom remodel with Sterling products usually takes two to three weeks, with a written schedule before we start.
We order Sterling components directly through trade supply channels, which gives us access to factory-matched panels and drain kits without the big-box retail markup. We also work with KraftMaid cabinetry, Cambria and Silestone countertops for the surrounding vanity work, so the whole bathroom comes from one crew and one written number.
