James Hardie Bathroom Remodeling: The Miami Owner’s Guide

James Hardie bathroom remodeling in Miami typically runs $10,620 – $33,040 depending on the size of the wet area, whether you’re replacing fiber cement backer board behind tile, and which fixtures you’re swapping. We stock James Hardie backer board and compatible trim on our trucks, and most material-only replacements are done in a single visit. The way most Miami homeowners discover they need this work is mid-demolition: a contractor pulls the old tile and finds the substrate behind it has turned to mush from years of humidity, or a homeowner pulls a loose tile and finds the backer board flaking apart.

Which James Hardie Models This Applies To

A walk-in shower with large-format tile and a built-in niche

In bathrooms, the James Hardie product you’re dealing with is almost always HardieBacker cement board, and the model line matters more than most people realize. We work with the standard 1/2-inch HardieBacker for walls and the 1/4-inch HardieBacker for floors and countertop underlayment. Both come in 3×5 sheets. There’s also HardieBacker 500, which is slightly denser and used more often in commercial or high-impact residential work, though we rarely spec it in a typical Miami home.

Here’s the compatibility gotcha most people miss: HardieBacker is not the same as James Hardie siding. The siding products, HardiePlank and HardiePanel, are exterior fiber cement. You cannot use siding stock as a tile backer indoors, and you shouldn’t use backer board on an exterior wall. If a previous contractor did either, that’s often why you’re reading this page. For bathrooms, you want the cement board with the 1/2-inch label and the grid pattern printed on the face. Check the edge stamp before a crew hangs it. We do OEM HardieBacker on every bathroom remodel we run, not aftermarket. The cost difference per sheet is small in Miami, and the failures we see with generic cement board are not worth the $6 saved.

Signs Your James Hardie Bathroom Remodeling Is Failing

  • Grout lines are cracking in a stair-step pattern. That’s almost always movement behind the tile, and the most common cause in Miami is a backer board that was never properly fastened or taped at the seams. Cement board doesn’t flex, but the framing behind it does, and un-taped seams let that movement telegraph through.
  • Tiles sound hollow when you tap them. A hollow tap means the tile has debonded from the board. HardieBacker holds thinset well when it’s clean and dry, but if a previous installer didn’t wipe the dust before setting tile, or set tile over a wet board, the bond fails inside a year.
  • Dark staining is bleeding through grout near the shower pan. This is water wicking up through the joint where the board meets the pan. HardieBacker itself doesn’t wick much, but if the board was installed in direct contact with a pan liner or the gap wasn’t silicone-sealed, Miami humidity finishes the job.
  • The bottom edge of the board feels soft when pressed. In older Miami homes, especially in Coconut Grove, we have opened shower walls and found the bottom six inches of backer board gone to powder. That’s the board sitting in water. HardieBacker is moisture-resistant, not waterproof. It should never touch a shower pan or tub flange directly.
  • Mold is growing on the surface of the board. Fiber cement doesn’t support mold growth, but the paper facing on drywall behind or the framing in front can. If you see mold on a bathroom wall, the problem is usually a missing or skipped vapor barrier, not the HardieBacker itself.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A remodeled primary bathroom with a soaking tub and walk-in shower

A full James Hardie bathroom remodel in Miami runs $10,620 – $33,040. On the low end, you’re looking at a small bathroom refresh: replacing the backer board in the shower surround, re-tiling, a new vanity, and maybe a tub-to-shower conversion. The high end gets you a larger wet area, custom tile work, structural repair behind the walls, and fixture packages from Kohler, Moen, or Grohe. Here’s the breakdown for the parts most people need:

Item Typical Installed Range (Miami)
Shower surround backer board replacement + tile $4,130 – $11,800
Tub-to-shower conversion with HardieBacker $4,130 – $11,800
Full bathroom remodel (wet area, vanity, fixtures) $10,620 – $33,040
Small bathroom remodel $5,900 – $14,160
Walk-in shower installation $5,310 – $14,160
Bathroom vanity installation $945 – $3,540

Every quote we write in Miami names the sheet count, the brand (HardieBacker, no substitutions unless you ask), the thinset, the tape, the screws, and the labor, line by line. You get a written price before we open a wall. If the number changes because we find something behind the tile nobody could have predicted, we stop and talk before adding a dollar. The 365-Day Done Right Promise covers the work: if it fails within a year, we come back and fix it. No service call fee, no argument.

DIY or Call Us?

There is a safe way to check whether your HardieBacker is sound, and there is a way that puts you in a hospital. Pulling one loose tile to look at the board behind it is reasonable. Cutting out water-damaged board with a knife is reasonable, so long as the area is small and you’re not touching plumbing or electrical. What is not reasonable is removing a shower surround solo when the board behind it may be holding back years of hidden water damage. That’s how you find out the hard way that the framing rotted through three years ago.

One honest warning: cement board is heavy, and it produces silica dust when cut. If you’re cutting it inside, you need a proper respirator and ventilation. Most people who call us after a DIY attempt say the same thing: it took three weekends, cost more in tools than the labor would have, and the seams weren’t taped right. We’re happy to do the whole job. Call (850) 988-7559 and we’ll put a written estimate in your hand before we pick up a single tool. Give you a number first, then pick up the tools.
