CertainTeed Bathroom Remodeling: The Miami Owner’s Guide
We stock and install CertainTeed-compatible bathroom remodeling components across Miami, with most full bathroom remodels running $10,620 – $33,040 depending on scope, materials, and how much of the existing framing and plumbing we’re working around. If you have a CertainTeed product that’s failed, cracked, or just stopped holding up after years of Miami humidity, we can match the replacement and get it installed correctly. Most owners discover the problem the hard way: a hairline crack in a corner, a soft spot underfoot, or water staining on the ceiling below.
The good news is that a failing bathroom component doesn’t usually mean a full gut. Sometimes it does. We’ll tell you which one you’re looking at before any tools come off the truck.
Which CertainTeed Models This Applies To

CertainTeed’s bathroom product line spans backer boards, moisture barriers, and finished wall systems rather than a single “model” of bathroom. The most common products we match in Miami homes are CertainTeed Diamondback and Durock cement boards (the substrate layer behind your tile), CertainTeed MemBrane waterproofing, and CertainTeed drywall products used on bathroom ceilings and non-wet walls. If you have a label, look for the product name printed along the board edge or on the corner of the panel. If the label is gone, measure the board thickness with a tape measure: Durock typically runs 1/2 inch for walls, 5/8 inch for ceilings and floors, and the 1/4 inch version shows up in older shower surrounds.
One compatibility gotcha we see regularly in Miami: CertainTeed Durock is not the same as USG Durock, even though both carry the word “Durock.” The formulations differ slightly, and mixing fasteners or thinset rated for one with the other voids the manufacturer installation spec. We match the replacement to what’s already behind your tile, not whatever the supply house has on the shelf that week. For OEM vs. aftermarket, our position is simple: when the board is still in production and available, we use the CertainTeed original. When a line is discontinued, we use a quality aftermarket product that meets the same ASTM C1325 standard for cement board and document it in the written quote.

Signs Your CertainTeed Bathroom Remodeling Is Failing
- Grout lines cracking repeatedly in the same spot. This usually means the substrate behind the tile is flexing, often because the original installer used too-thin backer board or spaced fasteners too far apart. The tile might look fine, but movement behind it will keep cracking the grout no matter how many times it’s re-grouted.
- Soft spots on the floor near the tub or shower curb. Water has found its way through a seam and into the subfloor. In Miami, where interior humidity sits high most of the year, once water gets behind a tile assembly it doesn’t dry out on its own. What feels like a small soft spot is often a much larger moisture problem underneath.
- Loose or hollow-sounding tiles. Tap a quarter across the wall. A dull thud means solid bond; a hollow ring means the tile has separated from the substrate. That separation is usually a waterproofing failure starting to spread.
- Mold or mildew stains bleeding through grout or caulk. Surface mold cleans off. Stains that keep returning from behind the grout mean moisture is trapped in the board itself. CertainTeed cement boards don’t rot, but they can hold water, and trapped water breeds mold inside the wall cavity.
- Water stains on the ceiling below the bathroom. By the time water shows up downstairs, the leak has been working through the floor assembly for a while. The source is almost always around the toilet flange, shower pan, or tub drain, but the visible stain is only the last stop.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

A full bathroom remodel in Miami runs $10,620 – $33,040 through Penhallow Remodeling, and the range is driven by three things: size of the space, whether we’re repairing or replacing the underlying framing, and the finish materials you pick. A small bathroom remodel comes in lower at $5,900 – $14,160, while a walk-in shower installation alone typically runs $5,310 – $14,160. If the CertainTeed backer board is what failed and we’re replacing tile down to the studs, that work is included in the remodel price, not billed as a separate line item surprise.
Every quote we write includes the parts, the labor, the tear-out, the haul-away, and the written guarantee. There’s no “wall repair, extra” added after we open things up. If we find rotted framing behind a failed shower, we show it to you, explain what it costs to fix, and get a signed change order before we touch it. You’ll never see a number change without seeing it in writing first.
DIY or Call Us?
You can check a few things without opening any walls: look for cracked grout, feel for soft spots, run the shower and watch for water pooling where it shouldn’t. You can even pull a shower handle escutcheon plate and look for signs of moisture inside the wall. What you shouldn’t do is start pulling tile off a shower wall yourself. Once the waterproofing layer is compromised, even a small area of exposed backer board becomes a pathway for water into your wall cavity. In Miami’s humidity, that turns into mold fast.
The other reason we’d tell you to call before you start prying: matching the replacement board thickness and fastening schedule matters. A mismatched patch job behind new tile is how the next crack starts. Call (850) 988-7559, tell us what you’re seeing, and we’ll walk you through whether it’s a repair or a replacement. Either way, you get a written number before we pick up a tool.
FAQs

CertainTeed cement board itself does not rot and can last 50-plus years, but the tile assembly around it in Miami typically needs attention every 15 – 25 years due to failed grout, caulk, or waterproofing seams, not the board itself. What fails first is almost always the waterproofing layer or the sealant joints, which let water reach the board and everything behind it. Call (850) 988-7559 and we can look at whether your board is still salvageable or needs replacement.
In most cases, no. Once cement board has been saturated, the tile assembly has lost its structural bond and patching over it creates a weak point that will crack again. We replace the affected section down to the studs, install fresh board and waterproofing, and retile to match. If the board itself is intact but the tile has debonded, we may be able to save it, and we’ll tell you so honestly before recommending a full replacement.
A standard bathroom remodel in a Miami home runs 2 – 4 weeks from demo to final caulk, depending on whether we’re reconfiguring plumbing or tiling a large shower. Repairs that don’t require full tear-out can take 2 – 5 days. We give you an arrival window in writing before the job starts, and we keep it.
We keep CertainTeed Durock and Diamondback board in our regular inventory along with compatible fasteners, thinset, and waterproofing membranes, so we don’t need to order and wait on most jobs. For specialty CertainTeed products or discontinued lines, we source the closest matching current product and note it in your written quote before any work begins. We also work with KraftMaid cabinetry, Cambria and Silestone countertops, and Kohler and Moen fixtures in bathroom remodels.
