Kohler Bathroom Remodeling: The Miami Owner’s Guide
Kohler bathroom remodeling in Miami typically runs $10,620 – $33,040 depending on the scope, fixture line, and how much plumbing or waterproofing work sits behind the walls. We stock common Kohler-compatible trim kits, cartridges, and valve assemblies on our trucks, and we can match most Kohler series parts within one business day through our local Miami supply partners. Most owners call us after the same quiet failure: a shower that drips at 3 a.m., a handle that spins without changing the temperature, or a tub spout that has started leaking into the wall cavity behind it.
We’re Penhallow Remodeling Miami, an independent remodeling contractor. We’re not affiliated with Kohler, but we’ve been installing and servicing their fixtures across Miami for years, including plenty of work in Coconut Grove where the older plumbing tells a story with every fitting.
Which Kohler Models This Applies To

The parts we handle most often in Miami belong to the Kohler Devonshire, Purist, Forté, and Memoirs lines, along with the older Coralais and Antique series still common in homes built before 2000. The compatibility gotcha most homeowners miss: Kohler’s Rite-Temp pressure-balancing valve has changed cartridge specifications three times since 1998. A cartridge from a 2015 Purist valve will not seat in a 2004-era Coralais body, even though both say “Rite-Temp” on the trim plate. If you can read the model number off the back of the trim plate or the valve body itself, we can match it before we ever ring your doorbell. The number is usually stamped in fine print that starts with “K-” followed by four to six digits. If it’s worn off, a photo of the handle and escutcheon plate usually gets us to the right family.
On the OEM-versus-aftermarket question: for cartridges and pressure-balancing units, we order genuine Kohler parts. The tolerances on aftermarket cartridges are close but not exact, and in Miami’s hard water, a slightly loose seal turns into a drip inside six months. For trim kits and cosmetic pieces, quality aftermarket equivalents from Danco or Plumb Pak often fit fine and cost 30 – 40% less. We’ll tell you which is worth paying for before you spend a dollar.
One more Miami-specific reality: coastal humidity and salt air accelerate pitting on metal trim, especially brushed nickel and polished brass, by a factor of two compared to inland Florida. If your shower trim is ten years old and showing copper speckles, it’s not a cleaning problem. It’s the substrate, and no amount of polish brings it back.

Signs Your Kohler Bathroom Remodeling Is Failing
- Temperature swings when someone flushes a toilet. The Rite-Temp pressure-balancing spool has seized from mineral buildup. The cartridge needs replacement, not adjustment. This is the single most common Kohler service call we run in Miami.
- Handle turns full rotation without stopping or changing temperature. The plastic stem adapter inside the valve has stripped. It’s a $30 part, but it requires pulling the cartridge and resetting the temperature limit stop. If you set it wrong, you get a scalding surprise the next time the water heater cycles.
- Constant slow drip from the tub spout after the valve is off. This means the cartridge seal has failed, not the spout. Replacing the spout won’t fix it. The water is bypassing the cartridge and trickling down through the spout body.
- Black or brown specks in the water from the tub spout only. The rubber gasket inside the spout’s diverter has begun to dissolve. In Miami’s older homes, we also see this when the galvanized nipple behind the spout is rusting from the inside.
- Leak or water stain on the ceiling below a second-floor bathroom. This usually isn’t the valve at all. It’s the tub drain gasket or the caulking around the tub flange. But we’ve also found pinhole leaks in the brass valve body where hard water has corroded the solder joint. That’s the one that turns a $400 repair into a full shower valve replacement.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s what Kohler-specific bathroom remodeling actually costs in Miami, based on the jobs we price weekly:
- Cartridge replacement (Rite-Temp or standard pressure-balancing): $295 – $635 installed, including the genuine Kohler cartridge, temperature limit reset, and handle re-alignment.
- Valve replacement (cutting into the wall, replacing the valve body): $1,180 – $2,950 installed, including cement board patch, waterproofing, and new trim kit.
- Shower trim upgrade (new handle, escutcheon, tub spout, shower head): $945 – $3,540 installed, depending on whether you stay in a mid-tier line like Forté or move up to Purist.
- Full bathroom remodel with Kohler fixtures throughout (shower, tub, vanity, toilet): $10,620 – $33,040, with the largest cost drivers being tile selection, whether we’re moving plumbing, and whether the existing waterproofing behind the walls is intact.
The reason the full-remodel range is wide is simple: a mid-1950s Miami bathroom with original cast-iron plumbing and drywall behind the tile costs more to renovate than a 2010 bathroom where we can keep existing plumbing rough-ins. We’ll put the number in writing before we start, and that number does not change unless you change the scope. Every job carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the work fails inside a year, we come back and fix it at no charge. The Kohler parts themselves carry their own manufacturer warranty, and we register them for you on the day of install.
DIY or Call Us?
There’s honest DIY space here, and then there’s stuff you should not touch. Cleaning a clogged shower head, replacing a tub spout that unscrews by hand, and swapping a trim kit without opening the wall are all reasonable homeowner tasks if you have the right Allen key and a little patience. Where DIY goes wrong in Miami: pulling a cartridge without depressurizing the system, forcing a seized cartridge out and scoring the valve body, or resetting the temperature limit stop without knowing the default hot-water setting. A scored valve body means the next cartridge won’t seat at all, and now you’re paying for wall work instead of a parts swap. If you’ve got water behind the wall or a valve that’s been dripping for more than a month, call us at (850) 988-7559. We’ll give you a number first, then pick up the tools.
FAQs

A Kohler valve body itself should last 20 – 30 years in Miami. The cartridges and seals inside it should be replaced every 8 – 12 years depending on water hardness and whether your home has a water softener. Coastal humid air doesn’t affect the internal valve, but it does shorten the cosmetic life of metal trim by roughly half compared to inland Florida.
In most cases, no. The cartridge is a self-contained unit with internal rubber seals that cannot be replaced individually. Once a seal fails, the whole cartridge goes. We replace it with a genuine Kohler unit rather than attempting to flush or recondition the existing one. Call (850) 988-7559 for an exact quote on your model.
A straightforward cartridge swap takes 60 – 90 minutes including water shutoff, depressurization, part replacement, temperature limit reset, and clean-up. A full valve replacement that requires opening the wall and re-waterproofing typically runs half a day to a full day depending on tile access. We leave the bathroom clean when we leave.
We keep the most common Rite-Temp cartridges, seals, and trim kits for the Devonshire, Purist, Forté, and Memoirs lines on our trucks. Parts for less common series or older Coralais and Antique models we order same-day through our Miami supply partners. We also stock compatible parts for KraftMaid cabinetry, Cambria quartz surfaces, and Silestone countertops on full bathroom remodels.
