Quikrete Kitchen Remodeling: The Miami Owner’s Guide

Quikrete kitchen remodeling in Miami typically means one of two things: either you’re working with Quikrete cement board and surface products during a kitchen renovation, or you’ve hit a failure point in materials already installed and need them addressed. A full kitchen remodel in Miami runs $16,520 – $53,100 depending on layout size, cabinet line, and countertop material, while smaller scoped repairs like backsplash installation land at $945 – $2,950. Most homeowners discover a problem when grout starts cracking, tile lifts at the edges, or the cement board substrate behind a backsplash has turned soft and spongy from years of Miami humidity working its way through the grout lines.

We’re Penhallow Remodeling Miami, and we work with Quikrete products on kitchen jobs regularly. We’re an independent contractor, not affiliated with Quikrete, but that independence works in your favor: we install what the job actually needs, not what a brand wants to push. Trevor Nash has worked throughout Miami for years, including plenty of Coconut Grove kitchens where older homes hide surprises behind every wall. His approach is simple: give you a number first, then pick up the tools.

Which Quikrete Models This Applies To

Quikrete doesn’t make kitchen “appliances” the way you’d think of a range or dishwasher. Their products show up in kitchens as the structural layer: cement board, mortar, grout, and self-leveling underlayment. The compatibility question is less about a model number and more about which Quikrete product line was used and where. Quikrete’s standard cement board comes in 3-foot by 5-foot sheets at half-inch thickness, though quarter-inch board is sometimes used for backsplashes over existing drywall. The relevant spec is the board thickness and whether it was rated for wet areas.

Here’s the gotcha we see in Miami: some contractors install regular drywall behind kitchen backsplashes and then skim it with Quikrete mortar, thinking the mortar adds moisture resistance. It doesn’t. The proper assembly is cement board substrate, thinset mortar, tile, and sealed grout. If you’re not sure what’s behind your tile, take a photo of the edge at an outlet box or where the backsplash meets the counter. We can usually identify the material from a clear picture during an estimate visit. When it comes to replacement materials, we prefer OEM Quikrete products when the job calls for their specific performance profile, but we’re honest about when a quality aftermarket equivalent from a brand like Laticrete or Mapei will perform identically for less money. That’s a conversation we have before any work starts, not after.

Signs Your Quikrete Kitchen Remodeling Is Failing

  • Grout cracking along the countertop-to-backsplash seam. This is usually a movement joint issue, not a material failure. The house settles, the counter flexes slightly, and rigid grout cracks. The fix is removing the grout at that seam and replacing it with color-matched silicone caulk, which flexes without failing.
  • Tile sounding hollow when tapped. Hollow-sounding tile means the mortar bond has released. In Miami, this often traces to thinset that was mixed too dry or allowed to skin over before the tile was set. If more than 20% of the field sounds hollow, replacement is cheaper than chasing individual tiles.
  • Soft or spongy spots behind the backsplash. Press gently on the tile. Movement means the substrate beneath has absorbed moisture and is breaking down. This is the humidity failure we see most often in older Miami kitchens where drywall was used instead of cement board.
  • Efflorescence or white crust on grout lines. That white powder is mineral salt being pulled through the grout by moisture. It signals water is moving through the wall assembly, not just sitting on the surface. Sealing the grout won’t fix it; you have to stop the moisture at the source.
  • Grout color that won’t stay consistent. If you clean and reseal the grout and it still looks patchy a month later, the grout was likely mixed inconsistently during install, or the wrong grout type was used for a high-moisture zone. In either case, regrouting is the honest fix.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

New painted shaker cabinets with an organized deep drawer

In Miami, fixing a failed Quikrete backsplash assembly runs $945 – $2,950 installed, including demolition of the old layer, new cement board substrate, thinset, tile, grout, and sealant at the movement joints. If the substrate failure extends into surrounding drywall or you’re doing a full kitchen remodel at the same time, the scope grows into the broader $16,520 – $53,100 kitchen range. What drives the price up or down is square footage, tile choice, whether we’re removing one layer or three, and whether the cabinets need to come out to access the wall.

Every job comes with a written price before any work starts. Not an estimate range, not a verbal ballpark: a number you can hold us to. The invoice on day one is the invoice at the end. That’s the Kingswell standard we operate under, and it’s been that way since 2004. You’ll also get our 365-Day Done Right Promise in writing: if the work fails inside a year, we come back and fix it at no charge. Free. No service call, no re-inspection fee.

DIY or Call Us?

Some of this you can safely assess yourself. You can check for hollow tiles, look for cracking grout, and press on the backsplash to feel for movement. You can take photos and look for efflorescence. What you shouldn’t do is start tearing out tile and cement board without knowing what’s behind it. In Miami kitchens built before 1990, you may find wiring, plumbing, or even structural supports that don’t match what a home improvement video shows. We’ve opened walls in Coconut Grove and found things the homeowner had no way of anticipating.

If the substrate has failed, the job involves cutting out the old board, possibly shimming framing, installing new cement board, and waterproofing the seams. That’s not a weekend project, and doing it wrong means redoing it in a year. The honest answer: assess it yourself, but let us do the repair. Call (850) 988-7559 and Trevor will come out, look at the wall, and give you a written number before any work is discussed further.
